Windshield Crack

Welll I'm under 10K miles and I got a crack in my windshield... I looked for ANY rock chips and I did not find any... The crack started out like about 10 inches long and has been getting longer every day... I followed the crack all the way under the seal and could not determine how it started... Now I do have insurance to cover this of course and I would recommend EVERYONE to ensure they have it as well... I highly doubt you could get this covered under warranty (but if I'm wrong, please let me know)... This is the first time I ever got a warranty and haven't really looked into it... Just wanted to get this out in the community for people to pay attention to...

If the crack started at the edge of the glass under the seal & you see no obvious chips that may have started it, definately take it to the dealer to be inspeted 1st. Your glass is covered 5yrs/60k miles for stress cracks.

Sweet, thanks for the info... I knew you'd come through... Yes, there are no obvious chips of any kind and it started under the seal at the bottom of the windshield.. Sorry I don't have any pics of it.

Well I just gott of the phone with the guys I bought the car from... http://www.avondalehyundai.com/ and they said that windshields are NOT generally covered... I told him that it was NOT from a rock or chip and that it came from under the weather seal... He said it still wasn't covered... He did say that a manager could look at it and make the determination, but I doubt he'll go through with it.

That's bullshit, we've covered 1/2 dozen over the past decade from stress fractures, as long as there is no evidence of impact. I would try to make an appt w/another dealership svc dept.

Its highly possible that the chip is small enough to not look significant.

my protege5 was hit by the tiniest (think sand) sized pebble. it caused a small crack to form that went from the base to halfway up the glass.

I asked the glass guy why (i used safelite) and he said its because all of the flex in the windshield is on the outer edges. So the smallest nick can cause a crack to start.

So id look for any tiny tiny chips you wouldnt think could cause it to crack.

Also, they could just be telling you no over the phone, because they dont want to commit to a promise before inspection.

My nissan dealer factory service rep used a bic ballpoint pen and ran it along the crack. If the pen stops, it indicates a chip (no matter how tiny), and it wasn't covered by factory, but if the pen ran along the crack w/o stopping, it was covered as stress fracture...

Ditto here. We have covered windshields as well. It comes down to the dealer wanting to help out.

^^^^^Very good points that I agree with.

Bottom line is that Hyundai covers all their glass for 5yrs/60k mi for any manufacturers defects.
