Hey guys,
Just got my coupe (2.0T) over the weekend and I love it. Now I have a dumb question. Keep in mind I am in no way a genius with cars and this is the first time I have owned a "sports car." My question is, when going about 100 km +, is it normal for the RPM to stay constant at 2500 to 3000 rpm? And I guess higher if I am faster. Just wanted to know if this is normal (it is at about 3000 rpm at 120, then goes higher if I accelerate). Thanks in advance. |

Is yours a 5 speed or 6? If 5 then for sure yes, if 6 then it should be at 2500 or less at 100 kmph. The only thing that affects rpm when the clutch is all the way out is the speed the car is going, generally speaking. Generally, 4 cyl motors have too little power at high speeds to stay low in rpm so they are geared for higher rpm at higher speeds - even when coasting. So ya ... unless you have a V-8 you typically will not be below 2,000 rpm at 100 kmph. I have seen big blocks idle around 2,000 at 100 kmph. The only time to worry is if you are not getting around 30 mpg economy (which is 12.75 km/l) with your windows up and a/c off with one person in the car. I can get 34. If you get less than 30 in normal air temp - like 70 deg F or 21 deg C - then something is wrong and your engine is spinning too fast.
