I started following snoopy on gencoupe and was doing some research of my own and ended up here. Can someone explain what a dying synchro sounds like? Or does a dying synchro just mean you're going to grind pretty much every time into the gear with the broken synchro? The reason I ask is because I'm trying to track down a strange sound in my car (and trying to record it too but it's not easy to hear... will get a video up soon). I originally thought it might be surge: sounds kind of like a turbine rattling around, but I can reproduce it at slow speed and it seems to be related more to shifting that actually removing my foot from the throttle. So I basically taught myself how a transmission/drive train works and I now think it's some gear in the tranny rattlin' around.

Pre vid attempted sound description

1. Shift gear (1st-2nd, 3rd-4th seem to be most common)
clunk, chhhhhhhwhiiiiiiiiiiiir

Ugh so useless. I'll see if I can get some good samples out of the videos I have tomorrow and post them up, but some more info: From stock car, I did the wastegate mod (I think only one turn...) within like a week of ownership. I'm pretty sure this sound has been around for quite some time, I just didn't think much of it... that is why originally I was like, "oh no, have I been surging for 22K km". The next thing I got was PA stock reflash (91). Totally forgot about the wastegate.... it'd been like a year. Drove that (pretty hard) for a week or 2 until I remembered, returned it to stock. Didn't notice much difference, and the noise is definitely still the same. Thus with some playing, I arrived at tranny problem... most notably, when I hold my camera with my shifting hand, you can hear the sound I'm talking about better, almost like through the shifter. Also if I poke the shifter when in gear (like, if in 3rd, poke it towards the console) it seems to make a similar sound.

Really... I don't care much if it's a tranny problem because the dealership is already aware of the 5th gear grind (oh yeah, have that too, even after ATF change) so they will be fixing it. If it's something else, I just want to know wtf it is and if it's normal. And if it's surge... I need a new BOV

Update: Video.

@Aerankas, the synchros going out will not allow the gears to mesh smoothly causing a grinding noise from inside the tranny.

@drewfus, many have had no issues (including me) with their trannies what-so-ever, others have had theirs replaced once with no more issues, yet there are others that on their 3rd tranny. So no way to tell, although I can say that my car is a 2010 R-Spec bought in Dec of 2009, built in Oct of 2009 with no issues possibly due to the fact I swapped my M/T fluid within the 1st thousand miles along with the front shifter bushings.

The 5th year grind will get so bad in time it will make the gear almost usless. When mine went out I found myself skipping the gear all together. I noticed the issue on mine at about 19K miles and it had to be replaced by 22K miles it went bad fast. I have 37K miles on it now and haven't had an issue sense.

But who knows lol.
