This is a bunch of years back now (2001, specifically) but I've been very, very sceptical of ZMAX ever since then. There was a major lawsuit filed by the FTC in the US (not all of us are in the states, so it's important to clarify) against ZMAX.

FTC Sues Speedway Motorsports and Oil-Chem Subsidiary

Oil-Chem is actually the manufacturer of Zmax, so any claims they make are 100% advertising, not independant testing.

Just my two cents, which, with the current exchange rate, makes 'em worth about 1.6 cents.

I've run Duralube in my old 1980 Parisienne, but it's possible that that just couldn't be damaged any further than it already was, and LucasOil additives in fuel, transmission, and oil with my GrandMarquis (and it really helped with the well-documented issues with oil-burning in the older 4.6L Ford V8). However, I'm not planning on using anything when I get the GC, and I've never needed to use anything in my 2003 Acura RSX, either (currently 150,000km, or about 90,000 miles.)

Like I said, just my two cents.

Thanks for the info. I think I mentioned that Zmax may have some problems with bearing corrosion!!! Not good.

hey guys this is all good info but i am still kinda newbie on the whole synthetic oil. I am about to do my first oil change just a little under 3k miles. My 3.8L is mostly a daily driver right now, should I even be changing to synthetic? What kind of a difference will it make?

Its my understanding that it helps with cold start. The synthetic supposedly sticks to the hard moving parts in the engine and lessens friction at start up. Conventional oil tends to just fall to the oil pan and has to wait to be picked up. This will be my first time with synthetic tho. My father has been a dealer tech for years and when synthetics first hit the market he was skeptical but eventually he told me that in the long run it is better on the engine.

I picked up 2 mpg on my Accent by going from 5w20 dealer dino to 5w30 synthetic. I generally use Castrol 5w30 full synthetic.

I plan on changing mine at the 4700 mile mark recommended after the first change.

If you race, maybe you could get some benefit due to the extreme conditions for prolonged periods. I have always been under the impression, that if you don't use synthetic from the get go (IE factory), why bother. Companies test engines for thousands of hours, if they thought it helped, they would use synthetic. Again, for race applications or ultra high performance cars, I think it may be beneficial. Let the wars begin.

Any thoughts on Castrol Edge, it is supposed to be 8 times better than Mobil 1?

I actually run 15W40 diesel oil in my muscle car.

Everything you ever wanted to know about oil can be found here.

Welcome
Hey dboz1,
I don't know if you know but the 2.0T engine's recommended oil has been changed to synthetic 5W40.
I took my car in for an early oil change and they had to get some Castrol synthetic delivered because they didn't have any oil for the GC, so I was there a little longer than I should'ave been.

I am not sure if you have a V6 or 2.0T, so I said something...

Mister

I tend to gravitate towards Valvoline but have used Mobil 1 in past cars. I will however only use Hyundai filters in my Coupe. I ran a fleet of cars in a past career and tend to believe that factory parts repaired/replaced by factory service people increases your chances of good coming from the dealership or company when the stuff hits the fan.
