Ottawa - Fall OK-TURBO-FEST - October 30, 2010.

2010 FALL OK-TURBO-FEST(Almonte to Eganville)

I met up with ManOnFire at Kanata Centrum at 1:00 pm yesterday. The driving conditions were perfect!

Handed out a copy of some directions and the map.

As we were about to head out, we spied a Silverstone 2.0T GT just leaving the parking lot. We waved the driver to stop by and sure enough, he swung around to say hello. The gentleman's name was Joe, another keen Gen Coupe adopter. We told him about the forum and the growing popularity of this car. With any luck, we may see him online.

From Kanata Centrum to Almonte. A 30 minute charge along the 417 W to the Almonte/Carp exit and Regional Rd. 49. A construction detour fouled my directions in Almonte, but we eventually got to the official starting point, the Almonte Esso station.

As I mentioned to ManOnFire, I realized the massive difference between driving this route in the middle of a pack of cars versus leading our two car group. There were a few missed turns and we doubled-back several times. But spirits were high and I didn't hear any grumblings from MoF(thank you for your patience!).

I'd say the first two sections of the route(Tatlock Rd./RR 9 and the 511) are the driver-focused parts. If you carry any decent speed through these sections, you need to stay on your toes. Particularly the one or two high speed sweeping turns with light gravel scattered across the road surface.

We passed the entrance to CMP(and a large convoy of Mustangs) and stopped at the rest point/9-hole golf course in front of Calabogie Peaks Resort for the excellent photos MoF has provided above. Looking around in this area, you really appreciate the expression "God's country".

My car was far too dirty to get any decent camera time. So, here's ManOnFire's clean, clean, clean Tsukuba Red beauty!

Continuing on, we followed Calabogie Road/RR 508 along the perimeter of Calabogie Lake and through the Lanark Highlands. From this point onwards, the scenery became epic. Bright yellows, bold reds and shades of green all over the hillsides. The driving was just as enjoyable but a little less intense than earlier. Overall, there were some segments where the road was a bit rough. MoF said his suspension was treating him well. I was getting rattled a bit, but not so much that it ruined the experience.

We drove the entire route including the RR 64 and RR 512 which I didn't get to see with the BMW driving club before(they were running late that day and drove directly to Eganville via RR 41).

Believe it or not, we had open road for 95% of the drive except for this odd truck carrying a Hobbit-house of some kind. The driver was good enough to let us pass when the opportunity presented itself. But we were wondering what the heck was inside that thing on the back!

We got to Eganville, parked at The Granary and dined on what I have to say was absolutely the finest muther fookin' German schnitzel I have ever tasted! Yes sir, it was!

After that, we returned to our cars, heard the screams of some young child being raped across the ravine(must have been pwnd88/Bug Boy) and made our way back home.

Sincere thanks to ManOnFire for coming out. A recon mission is definitely more enjoyable with a teammate covering your six.

Great work with those videos!

And it goes without saying:

YOU GUYS AND GIRL(S) DEFINITELY WANT TO TRY THIS ROUTE!

I'll post a firm date for the event.

Don't let these pics fool you. If you have the time or inclination, check out the pre-meet media in the identical thread over at gencoupe. ManOnFire captured our entire recon drive and edited the run into 12 videos. We kept it safe, but "spirited" all the same.

The first post has been updated with both detailed and simplified driving directions. The route isn't complicated, but it may be worthwhile to review the stage notes before Saturday.

The detailed STAGE 2 directions will be posted tonight.

I'll have printouts of the stage notes(below) and the map on Saturday.

Okay. All the information regarding this route is now in the first post.

Maps illustrating each stage of the cruise. Detailed directions illustrating landmarks and turning points(necessary as the signage in Stage 1 and Stage 2 is occasionally inadequate and/or easily missed). And simplified directions that condense the "novel" to pace notes.

If you can't make it out today, don't despair. You've got all the info laid out in the first post. Grab your keys, maybe a co-driver, hop in your Gen Coupe, Accent, Yugo, whatever and take an enjoyable road trip to Eganville.
